The Forest Stewardship Council’s FSC® logo is one of the best recognised environmental symbols in the world. The FSC® runs a global forest certification system that allows consumers to identify, purchase and use wood, paper and other forest products produced from well-managed forests and/or recycled materials.
Back in 2011, Gucci introduced a new type of packaging exclusively made with certified FSC® material.
Fast forward to 2017, and 100% of paper and cardboard used in packaging was FSC® certified. Gucci became a member of FSC® Italy. In a move to reduce the environmental impact of our packaging, we have replaced silica-gel sachets in our shoe packaging with organic cotton sachets containing a natural clay desiccant. We are investigating the possibility of rolling this technology out to all of our leather goods packaging.
Research and Development
We have established a highly innovative in-house R&D team at Gucci. They have worked to reduce the amount of packaging we need to use when transporting products. For example, by developing rectangular boxes that fold down to three different sizes they have reduced the number of vehicle trips we need.
We also source triangular boxes for bags, which fit together in neat squares, again reducing the number of vehicles needed to transport them and reducing our carbon and packaging resource impact. If you love origami and spatial puzzles, you’ll love our R&D team’s work!
